Fluvanna Girls' Softball League

Frequently Asked Questions

FGSL would like to thank you for taking the time to inquire about our league. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions and we hope this information provides useful to you.

  1. My daughter has no experience playing softball. Is this the program for her?
    a. Yes. Our program prides itself on teaching fundamentals and including every player in every game. Dixie softball requires that every child plays a minimum of two consecutive innings. FGSL ‘s goal is to teach these young girls more than just fundamentals, but how to play together as a team.
  2. Where does my registration fee go?
    a. Your fees go to covering uniforms for your daughter and the insurance and franchise fees for her. Your child will receive a jersey and socks. Equipment, and umpires come from fundraising, concessions, and sponsorships.
  3. Do the teams travel?
    a. Yes we travel to the surrounding counties of Goochland, Buckingham, Cumberland, Powhatan and Amelia. The amount of traveling you do is directly based on how many girls sign up in our program. The more girls we have the less traveling you have to do.
  4. What do I have to purchase for my child to play?
    a. We ask that the parents provide a glove and facemask for their child. The league does supply equipment to each team. Each coach will receive bats, helmets, catcher’s equipment, rule books, and a first aid kit. FGSL does recommend that you purchase your child a helmet if you have concerns about her sharing with her teammates. Cleats are recommended but not required.
  5. Do I have to work the concession stand?
     a. Yes. Our concession stand pays for our umpires. Without them, we would not be able to play. We are currently working on an opt out offer, but there will be a fee for this service.
  6. Will there be requirements of me while in the concession stand?
    a. Yes, you will be required to cook, clean, count money, and run the register. We are trying to figure out ways to make it easier and convenient to work. There are training days offered, please reach out to your team mom for those dates
  7. What if I have an issue or question about FGSL or coach?
    a. FGSL recommends that you ask to speak to your coach privately with any concern. If you do not think the situation is being addressed properly, please contact our Vice President Drew Mauck. His emails and phone numbers will be provided on the board directory page.
  8. Why do I have to participate in fundraising after paying fees?
    a. The registration fee for your child barely covers the cost of uniforms. Our organization does not want to increase fees so we ask parents to help with fundraising and volunteering. Any effort is appreciated and goes to equipment, and other incidentals like the pitching machine, batting tees, and other training tools used to develop your daughter’s skills.
  9. When are practices?
    a. Practices start a week after the final sign ups. A skills clinic will be held the Saturday after sign ups and coaches will determine their teams on this day. Practices start the following Monday. All age levels practice twice during the week and once on Saturday except SweeTees. SweeTees practice once during the week and on Saturdays. Practices during the week run from 600-730, and 730-900, and begin at 900am on Saturday. We currently use Carysbrook, Pleasant Grove.
  10. How long is the season and when do games start?
    a. Games start normally by the second Saturday in April and the season runs for eight weeks. The season is completed by the first Saturday in June.
  11. Who will be coaching my child?
    a. FGSL relies on volunteers. We have be blessed in the past by having a lot of returning coaches come back year after year, but sometimes we have problems finding someone willing to step up. Please reach out to us if you are interested. FGSL is willing to offer guidance and assistance with any questions or concerns. All volunteers on the field will be required to fill out a coach’s application and agree to a background check.
  12. What is my question wasn't answered here?
Please email the league your question and we would be happy to answer it.
